A pitch for an upper middle-grade graphic novel

Premise:
Gus, almost thirteen, discovers a door to a magic land where he must discover the true reason he is there after learning they don’t want or need him.

Story:
Gus, almost 13 years old, is disillusioned with life. His parents, despite what they say, don’t have time for him; his best friend is secretly hanging out with the school bully; and worst of all, on his birthday he’ll be officially too old to be invited to Hogwarts (which he is sure exists). It’s time to retire his childish fantasy books, stop searching for Narnia, and forget about escaping to a world where he can finally be someone special.

So when Gus finds a letter that opens a door to a real-life magic world called Logos he immediately goes through — even though it’s addressed to someone else. Upon arriving, Gus is taken aback to discover there are no world-altering quests awaiting him. Instead, Logos has saved itself; it’s been ages since the locals stopped trusting their biggest problems to random children. But Gus needs to be a hero; he won’t go back to a world where he feels like a mistake.

Gus’s journey takes him to the Hero Academy, which oversees quests and prophecies, where he discovers that not only is he not needed, he’s not wanted. Apparently, humans aren’t supposed to be able to access Logos anymore; something has gone wrong. Pursued by a legion of legally-registered Heroes, Gus is forced to become a fugitive in a world he knows he’s supposed to save… a situation made worse when Gus accidentally (on purpose) destroys the Academy’s main castle.

Convinced the Hero Academy is evil – why else would they try to get rid of him – Gus adventures to uncover the truth, find his destiny, and save the world… whether he’s the chosen one or not.

Gus12 years old, wants to find a portal to a fantasy land more than anything else. He knows that becoming an adult means working until you fall asleep at your desk, bad backs, and loudly wondering what the point of all is if the interest rates are just going to keep rising (at least if his parents are any indicator). No way — he’s going to find somewhere where he can actually make a difference and be a hero.

Copernicus is a Sotyr, a race defined by their Story Quest. Without it they are… well, nothing. How can you know who you are if you don’t have a story? He also believes that any mistake will ruin his story, and thus has spent a long time sitting at the first crossroad. Copernicus quickly puts his hopes and dreams of a great Story Quest on Gus — he’s a human after all!

The manuscript is complete and I’m working on sample art pages at the moment — though I’m currently doing the art myself, I am open to collaborate with an artist! I love the joint creative process.
